Zaragoza is a special city for many reasons. It is known for being heroic, noble, and immortal, and for housing the second largest pedestrian square in Europe, Plaza del Pilar. Here stands the impressive Basilica del Pilar, a symbol not only of the city but of all Spain. Our Lady of the Pillar, the city's patroness, is a beacon of faith and devotion, and numerous miracles are attributed to her name, including the miraculous fact that two bombs did not explode upon hitting the Basilica during the Spanish Civil War.
One of the most unique and perhaps lesser-known features of Zaragoza is that it is the only city in the world with two active cathedrals: the Basilica del Pilar and the Cathedral of the Salvador, known as La Seo. This fact not only highlights the city's historical and spiritual richness but also underscores its central role in Spain's religious history.
The Basilica del Pilar is one of Zaragoza's architectural jewels. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar, this cathedral-basilica is a significant Baroque temple and one of the largest pilgrimage centers in the Catholic world. Its interior is adorned with frescoes by Goya and other artworks, and its tower offers unparalleled panoramic views of the city and the Ebro River.
The Cathedral of the Salvador, better known as La Seo, is an impressive example of architectural evolution over the centuries, combining Romanesque, Gothic, Mudéjar, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. It was consecrated in 1121 and built over the old Roman forum and the main mosque of Saraqusta, reflecting Zaragoza's rich multicultural heritage. Its Chapel of San Bernardo and the Tapestry Museum are notable attractions, drawing numerous visitors each year.
A Papal Privilege Since the 17th Century
Since 1676, Zaragoza has had the unique privilege of having two active cathedrals, an honor granted by Pope Clement X to resolve conflicts that had pitted the two temples against each other for centuries. The Bull of Union issued by the Pope allowed the coexistence of a single chapter with two residences, one in La Seo and one in Pilar. This arrangement remains in force today, with the Archbishop of Zaragoza pledging to observe the Bull upon taking office.
A History of Rivalry and Union
The history of the two cathedrals is marked by rivalry and eventual union. Alfonso I the Battler conquered Zaragoza from the Muslims and decided that the episcopal seat should be established in La Seo, built on the site of the old Roman temple and the Great Mosque. This decision was not well received by the canons of Santa María la Mayor (now the Basilica del Pilar), who argued that Christian worship in that area dated back to the 1st century. Disputes between La Seo and Pilar continued until the issuance of the Bull in 1676.
Strategically located between the Basilica del Pilar and La Seo, Hostal Plaza Boutique offers its guests an unbeatable location to explore these two magnificent cathedrals and all the wonders Zaragoza has to offer. Today, both cathedrals continue to be places of worship and hold regular masses, reflecting Zaragoza's spiritual vitality. The Basilica del Pilar also received the title of Minor Basilica in 1948, a recognition of its special devotion, relics, and high number of parishioners. Additionally, Zaragoza has another Minor Basilica, that of Santa Engracia, since 1991.
Comparison with otherspanish cities
While other cities in Spain, such as Cádiz, Plasencia, Salamanca, Vitoria, and Lérida, also have two cathedrals, in these cases, it is a matter of an old and a new cathedral, with the former lacking liturgical use. In contrast, Zaragoza stands out for having two active cathedrals, a fact that underscores its uniqueness and historical and religious significance.
